STORY: Following a trend set by Britain and the U.S., Canadians are asking the Federal Government for a statutory holiday on the eve of the new millennium. The request has come from Calgary 2000, one of the leading millennial organizations in Canada. "Canadians will have the opportunity to participate in once-in-a-millennium celebrations," said Calgary 2000 chairman Darryl Barber told the Calgary Sun. "It's both a practical and realistic proposal, because many people will take the day off anyway -- it's a Friday and it's the last day of the decade and the century." Calgary 2000 sent a letter to Deputy Prime Minister Herb Gray, who is responsible for the country's millennium celebrations. One of his prime points: A holiday would help businesses prepare for feared computer glitches caused by the millennium bug. "Canadian businesses will have an extra day to serve as a buffer," said Barber. DATE: 9/1/98 |
