STORY: Brighton Beach sunrise to shine in 24-hour millennium broadcast Midnight celebrations in Hagley Park and a sunrise breakfast at New Brighton beach will be Christchurch's contribution to a worldwide millennium broadcast. Two 24-hour broadcasts are in the works and Christchurch's events will appear on the BBC/PBS show. Community events like these will be sprinkled throughout the program that could be seen by one billion people. Turning Point 2000 director Rae Knutson told The Press that the Hagley Park celebration would appear between 11pm and midnight (NZT) with scenes from the beach breakfast being broadcast shortly after dawn. It was hoped that the dawn celebration would include a karakia and a karanga, a beacon at the end of the New Brighton pier, a kite display, a flotilla of boats led by the Year 2000 Waka being built at Rehua Marae, and other displays using natural elements. The fireworks at Hagley park begin at 10pm. Celebrations at New Brighton beach would start at 5am and once the sun rose, at 5.51am, the beach would come alive with a festive atmosphere.
