STORY: Leaders of several doctor organizations in Britain want to alleviate the fears that doctors won't be working on New Year's Eve 1999. According to a report from the BBC, the British Medical Association (BMA) is issuing guidelines to doctors on what to expect - and what they should provide - during the Millennium period. They cover everything from making sure computers do not succumb to the millennium bug, to checking that telephone lines can cope with the strain of hundreds of extra calls. Doctors are urging the public to stock up on home remedies for flu and colds, such as aspirin, and only to call out a doctor in a real emergency. Dr Simon Fradd, chairman of the Doctor Patient Partnership (DPP), is helping organize a massive publicity drive to inform patients about Millennium services. He said doctors would be looking after urgent calls only, and asked patients to make sure repeat prescriptions were up to date over the period. The DPP is planning to place information about late duty chemists and other services in pubs. "It's about the only time your doctor will advise you to go to the pub," he joked.
