STORY: San Francisco finalizing plans for citywide New Year's Eve celebration (Everything2000) - San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge will become a waterfall and backdrop for a laser light show New Year's Eve. Despite the announcement, event organizers, once criticized of making slow preparations, are still looking for major sponsors to fund the city's four event venues. The centerpiece for the evening's activities will be cascading waterfall from Golden Gate Bridge as part of the fireworks-laser show there. The bridge is scheduled to be closed, for about 20 minutes before and 20 minutes after midnight, to allow a waterworks show to go off safely says the San Francisco Examiner. City-sponsored events will also take place at Union Square, the Ferry Building and Civic Center Plaza featuring fireworks, laser shows and big screens. Also, the interfaith community will hold a peace alliance throughout the evening at Union Square that will include a spiritual religious ceremony. Mayor Willie Brown is scheduled to host the celebration at the Civic Center. Shortly before midnight, all the video screens at the various venues will focus on the bridge. So far, there are no major headlining acts scheduled to perform at the city events. Organizers say the costs of live entertainment have made finding a big time musical act prohibitive. So far, organizers have not announced any major sponsorships for the citywide celebration which is expected to cost $3-million.
