STORY: After months of selling sponsorships, negotiations on zone names and privacy from the press, organizers of Britain's Millennium Dome have announced the names and sponsors of all the zones. According to ITN Online, images of all 14 of the zones have now been published and details of some of these zones - some of which have been renamed - have been released. They include: HOME PLANET - sponsored by British Airways and airport operator BAA, the 65-metre wide zone centres on a shimmering metallic blue globe, entered through a tunnel. Visitors will be taken on a journey from earth through space and back to earth. JOURNEY - sponsored by the Ford motor company, the zone will show visitors what travel by land air and sea will be like in the future. SELF-PORTRAIT - This will include images of Britain painted by ordinary people and is sponsored by Marks & Spencer. MONEY - Visitors can play at being a tycoon in a new game in a zone sponsored by the Corporation of London and a consortium of financial institutions. FAITH - The zone will feature 17-metre high arches which will support six dramatic canopies. The zone will feature the life of Christ and look at other faiths in the UK. LEARNING - Sponsored by Tesco, this zone will take visitors back to their childhoods by recreating the sights and smells of school. Recruits are being employed to test the smells being considered in a competition dubbed "A Pong for Europe". BODY- Work on the giant 27-metre high sculpture Body which shows two figures embracing - is now well under way. The sculpture will weigh 600 tonnes and will go in the Body zone. The body will include nearly three miles of electrical cable. Its skeleton is now complete and work on the glass-reinforced concrete skin, which will be sprayed over a wire mesh to which tiles are then applied, will begin soon. Visitors will travel inside the 64-metre long structure and experience a multi-media show. DATE: 6/15/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
