STORY: Cincinatti gamemakers spoofs popular "Monopoly" to capitalize themselves They say it's "The Game That Took a Thousand Years to Create" but a couple of Cincinnati gamemakers hope "Millenniumopoly" will last no longer than New Year's Eve. The geniuses at Late for the Sky Production Company have created a board game that spoofs the popular Monopoly game made by Hasbro. In Millenniumopoly, the board starts with Father Time replacing the traditional Go in the opening space. Low-rent properties Mediterranean and Baltic avenues become Year 1000 and the Plague. Exterminate Y2K Bug holds the Income Tax space in the new game. Atlantic City, the model for the classic real estate trading game, is replaced by historical heroes and events of the last 1,000 years. In place of the railroads are explorers Leif Ericsson, Marco Polo, Columbus and Neil Armstrong. Utilities Electric Company and Water Works are switched to Peace and Love. Free Parking is Happy New Year! Players who land on the former Go to Jail space are sent Back to 20th Century. Luxury Tax becomes Party Cleanup. Players accustomed to improving their properties with houses purchase Blocks of Time instead. Just as four houses equal one hotel, four Blocks of Time equal a Century. Monopoly's eight familiar playing pieces are replaced by figures representing transportation: 1920s car, Viking ship, Trojan horse, World War I biplane, astronaut and for traveling on the information superhighway, the computer. The suggested retail price is $25 and the company says it's already sold 100,000 games. Hasbro also offers a Trivial Pursuit Millennium Edition. It costs $40 and boasts 105 color photo cards, a "collectible" tin box and 3,600 questions about the present millennium. Source: Chicago Sun Times DATE: 8/25/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
