STORY: Reports of lavish ceremonies and honeymoons making millennium weddings expensive On December 31, 1999, millions of couples worldwide will ring in the new millennium by saying, "I do". Couples are planning to marry at first light in New Zealand as well as in a mass wedding ceremony in Thailand. "The turn of the new millennium will result in record setting numbers of weddings worldwide" says Tricia Thomas, CEO of the Houston based Wedding Careers Institute in a press release. "Brides marrying in the year 2000 should begin planning their wedding well in advance," says Thomas. "The competition for space and wedding-related services will escalate with millions of newly engaged couples planning their wedding during this once in a lifetime occurrence." With brides all vying for the same church, banquet hall, photographer, or band, the services of a Certified Wedding Consultant will be essential. "We have experienced a dramatic increase in student enrollment in our training program for consultants at Wedding Careers Institute, Inc." says Thomas. With the average wedding in the U.S. costing from $18,000 to $25,000, brides are seeking the guidance, advice and expertise of a professionally trained wedding consultant. "Weddings in the U.S. are big business," says Thomas. Second only to the NBA in revenues, the Wedding industry grosses a whopping 32.4 billion dollars annually. The expectation level is very high for next year's weddings. Personalization and specialization will be a key factor in the Y2K wedding plans. Wedding guests will be flown to stately manors in England, or castles in Scotland. Couples will recite their vows on the side of a volcano, or leave their reception in a hot air balloon. Weddings will be broadcast live over the Internet, allowing family and friends worldwide to view the festivities. Next year's fashion trends lean toward simple, understated classic lines with intricate detail. The emphasis in bridal style will be on quality and fit, a welcome change from the flowing yards of fabric seen in past years. "Bride's are looking for uncomplicated gowns, that flatter their figure," Thomas states. Reception trends definitely point to opulent. Table settings include cut crystal, gold rimmed china, crisp linen napkins with French ribbon ties, and multi-layered coordinated table linens paired with fabric-draped chairs DATE: 8/17/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
