STORY: Posh and Polished, Millennium Edition of Monopoly a Favorite with Collectors By Elizabeth Scott (Everything 2000) - Maybe you were always the ship. William, my brother was always the racecar, and my sister Annie liked the hat. During summer evenings we rolled the dice, moved our pieces around the pale green board, building our real estate empires with green track housing and red hotels. Children and adults alike have enjoyed the sheer capitalistic zeal of the game Monopoly since 1934. Today, Monopoly is sold around the world in 80 different countries. This year the game, now sold by Hasbro, has introduced a sleek updated edition of the game to honor the millennium. The rules have remained the same. The board, properties, railroads, and the get out of jail free card is familiar, but the elements of the game have a futuristic almost sheer look. The board is made with hologram foil including an image of the memorable Monopoly man in top hat and bow tie. The money is sheer plastic and the game pieces have changed. Say good-bye to the thimble, the cannon, the ship, and the shoe. The new heavy silver markers include a computer, video cell phone, in-line skate, globe, plane (that looks suspiciously like a Concord), car, bicycle and to make any soccer mom proud, the yellow lab. "Monopoly transcend generations and the game continues to enjoy popularity with people of all ages," said Dale Siswick, general manager of marketing for Hasbro Games. "It's a natural fit to create Millennium editions of the games to celebrate their past, present and future." According to Siswick, the new packaging of Monopoly Millennium Edition gives it a feeling of a collectable. Monopoly Millennium Edition can be found in large toy stores around the country and retails for about $40.00. DATE: 07/19/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
