STORY:
Martha Stewart Calls Off Y2K Hike

The party planner decides trek is not a "good thing"

(Everything2000) Martha Stewart wanted to be the first to see the sunrise in the U.S. this New Year. So in true Martha style she decided trekking to the top of a mountain would be the answer. It turns out the trek is too tough and Martha is staying home instead.

In her latest magazine Martha Stewart describes her “practice” run on the mountain. Ms. Stewart and 17 guests set out on their hike in February to see how it would be to climb to the top of Cadillac Mountain. The mountain is in Acadia National Park, which according to the U.S. Naval Observatory will be the fist spot in the continental United States to see the sun rise in 2000.

On their preliminary hike Stewart and her group found the mountain to be too icy and too steep for the group to reach by sunrise. The summit is 1,532 feet high and covered in snow and ice. Stewart writes about her hike in her special millennium edition of Martha Stewart Living.

The queen of party planning is now organizing a much more relaxing holiday for her and her friends. They won't be wearing hiking boots just fuzzy bathrobes. The guests will be staying at Stewart's home on Mount Desert Island, about 160 miles from Portland, Maine.

While at her home, Martha will be the true entertainer serving guests fruit from candied grapefruit shells, tall blueberry muffins and pancakes that are a cross between a popover and a crepe. They won't be drinking coffee from mugs, no way. Martha will serve her café lattes in giant latte mugs served with a fine Irish linen napkin. All guests will have their own place at the table; there will be placecards. The cards are made from egg-shaped rocks “borrowed” from the mountain they attempted to climb.

Guess they'll have to watch the sunrise with the rest of America at 7:04 am.
