STORY: Big Apple is still without fireworks New Year's Eve and time is running out While most big cities around the world, including the major millennium cities of Sydney, London and Paris have finalized plans for a New Year's Eve fireworks extravaganza, New York City has not. According to the New York Post, Fireworks by Grucci has been in negotiations with city officials for months but so far no deal has been reached. The famous Long Island pyrotechnic company is also warning that if an agreement isn't reached soon, it may be too late to produce a massive show by New York standards. The company is producing fireworks programs around the world and is well know for New York's Macy Fourth of July show. The New York City Millennium 2000 Committee is reportedly trying to find sponsors to fund the show's $1 million price tag. So far, no sponsors have signed up and city officials say there's a 50-50 chance they will find one in time. One reason could be all the focus on New Year's Eve's activities in Times Square that will capture the attention of a worldwide television audience. The fireworks program will be over water in other parts of the city. "I'm amazed at how slow the United States has been to warm up to the millennium," Philip Butler of Fireworks by Grucci told The Post. "Maybe the United States doesn't do 'old' as well as Europe," he said. The fireworks company is planning the National Millennium Fireworks Show at the White House as well as programs in major cities and private parties in twelve time zones around the world. Dublin Ireland booked its show with Grucci back in 1993. Source: New York Post DATE: 8/23/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
