STORY: According to New Zealand's The Press, Gisborne Maoris have defended an invitation-only affair for millennium celebrations on Mount Hikurangi, the first spot in New Zealand to see the sun, which will receive $400,000 taxpayer funding. Te Runanga o Ngati Porou chief executive Amohaere Houkamau said the mountain would be closed to the public for the millennium because it could not cope with the tens of thousands of revelers expected in Gisborne for millennium celebrations. The Runanga agreed to limit participants in the mountain-top millennium celebrations to Ngati Porou, a select group of dignitaries, invited Iwi representatives, and leaders of other indigenous groups worldwide, about 2500 in total.
