STORY: Airline would be largest carrier to flights because of Y2K fears Singapore Airlines may be suspending flights on certain routes on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, as part of its Y2K contingency plans. An airline spokesman says if the decision to suspend flights is made, some services scheduled for Dec 31 or Jan 1 would be cancelled, while others, re-timed. The airline will make that decision in October. According to the airline, no aircraft will be flying the affected zones during the few hours before and after midnight on Dec 31. This applies to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is used by many aviation systems, and midnight local time in each affected zone. "If we cannot rule out the possibility of Y2K problems affecting safety, we shall not fly that route." Singapore Airlines VP Chew Leng Seng told The Straits Times. Poland's national airline LOT said last month it would ground all its planes on Jan 1 to avoid Y2K problems, while Vietnam Airlines and a British regional carrier has cancelled all its flights just before the start of the New Year. Virgin Atlantic has suspended flights on New Year's Eve but say its doing so to give its employees the holiday off. DATE: 8/06/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
