STORY: Families plan to protect food and finances Stockpiling cash and food as the millennium approaches tops the list of actions consumers will take, according to the CrossPad Y2K Survey, conducted by the Cross Pen Computing Group. Of those polled, a 79% expressed great concern about potential Y2K problems at home. Over 1,000 people were surveyed to determine their level of concern about this pressing issue and steps they might take to protect themselves and their family. According to a CrossPad press release, family concerns are a significant factor in consumers' minds. The CrossPad survey reveals more than half (55%) of the respondents will withdraw extra cash from their bank to keep on hand at home - just in case. While nearly two-thirds (63%) plan to make a complete listing of all financial records, few will disburse their savings among several financial institutions (7%), and less than two percent will liquidate financial assets or cancel credit cards altogether. Fully 16% reported that they would take no financial precautions against Y2K. More than half the respondents (56%) said they would stay home New Year's Eve because of the potential Y2K bug. As many as 41% said they would not fly. Even the family chariot is cause for concern for many respondents, as almost half (46%) will make sure they have a full tank of gas heading into the new millennium. Only 17% said they will check out their computerized car systems. Some food for thought: more than a quarter (26%) of the respondents claim they'll be stockpiling food and water, and 21% said they'll obtain a generator or extra batteries. Nearly one-third will be contacting manufacturers to ensure their appliances are Y2K compliant. The survey concludes that computer users have a moderately high degree of trust when it comes to the Y2K issue. Nearly two-thirds (63%) do not plan to fully back up their computers before the ball drops. Source: Business Wire DATE: 6/25/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
