STORY: The Hobart City Council is considering a plan requiring tickets for anyone wishing to see the first dawn of 2000 atop Mt. Wellington. Admission would be limited to 400 people. According to a story appearing on the Australian News Network, the proposal is designed to avoid the mountain being swamped by the public. Pinnacle Rd would be closed under the proposal and buses used to shuttle a limited number of people, including VIPs and the media, from the Springs to the summit. A report recommended that events be developed to encourage people to view the first dawn by looking up at Mt Wellington, rather than seeking to be on site. This would be assisted by a live broadcast of events on the mountain. Any events to mark the first dawn could not be realized without government or private sector sponsorship, the report said.
