STORY: Proposal calls for 17-minute, $1.5 million show atop the CN Tower Looking for a centerpiece for the his city's millennium activities, Toronto's mayor is proposing a huge fireworks and laser light extravaganza and its generating controversy. Mayor Mel Lastman wants a 17-minute fireworks program that will be shot off the city's tallest and most visible landmark, the CN tower at a cost of $1.5 -million (CDN). "I'm so excited. We're talking about a show that (will) really blow people's minds", Lastman told The Toronto Star. Lastman's plan reported would be funded by corporate sponsors and a possible $5-10 admission charge to a millennium show. Finding private sponsorship will be hard admits Lastman. If the mayor goes to the city council to seek funding, new reports say he will be running into trouble from council members who aren't hot on the idea. Toronto's millennium committee reportedly has a budget to spend $700,000 on activities outside of a fireworks and laser light show. Plans call for a "signature event" to take place every month next year. DATE: 07/13/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
