Packages offer volunteering over New Year's Eve instead of celebrating

Instead of paying trumped up New Year's Eve prices for a hotel or cruise, here's an offer that some people say has meaning for the millennium. Global Volunteers MillenniuM Service Project is looking for good-hearted people across the United States to spend their holiday building playgrounds and new homes, renovating community centers, tutoring children and more in communities that really need the help.

Volunteers pay just $450 per week for housing and all meals, making it one of the most inexpensive "millennial packages" around. Global Volunteers has special millennium volunteer packages for December 26 through January 1.

Openings are in Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas and West Virginia programs (at the price listed above). There is also a two week project being offered in the U.S. Virgin Islands, which will cost $1200, not including airfare (none of the prices listed include air fare or transportation to the project site) and run from December 26 through January 8.

Three meals a day are provided either by the program or by members of the local community. The community also chips in for housing, accommodating volunteers most often in private homes. When this is not possible, lodgings are arranged in local church or community facilities.

As the Global Volunteers Web site states, the MillenniuM Service Project "is your opportunity to wage peace together with your family, friends and other like minded Americans in your state or across the country and to demonstrate your hope for a better tomorrow."
