STORY: John Koskinen joins growing list of dignitaries putting words into action The White House's Y2K Czar is joining a long list of Y2K notables who are putting their actions into words by taking to the air New Year's Eve. John Koskinen, head of the President's Council on Year 2000 conversion says he will be in the air at midnight on New Year's Eve but declined to say where. "I would be out in the 6:30 shuttle from New York, and I will be in the middle of the air when the millennium comes," Koskinen said in a press conference. He reportedly said he is more confident than ever of the nation's Y2K readiness but is concerned about some US localities, small businesses and schools. Koskinen reportedly said assessing Y2K readiness of foreign countries has been hard but most major U.S. trading partners are well prepared. Koskinen joins a growing list of dignitaries who are pledging to fly on New Year's Eve. Federal Aviation Administration Chief Jane Garvey will be on a flight from Dallas to Washington DC to prove her faith in the air traffic control system. Y2K alarmist Peter de Jager has said he will be on a United transatlantic flight at midnight. Executives of several major airlines, including China Airlines and British Airlines have also pledged to be in the air at midnight. This comes despite reports of several airlines grounding planes on New Year's Eve to avoid any potential potential computer Y2K related problems. DATE: 8/06/99 For more E2000 stories, click here: |
