Every day's a Monday in Mexico

Baja, Mexico

This is the routine:

5:15am: You hear a chorus of zippers--no alarm needed here. Everyone is up before dawn because there's so little daylight and so much road to cover. We are in the desert, so the days are warm and the nights are very cold. At one makeshift campground, I woke up to ice on my tent.

6:30am: The line starts for breakfast . There are more than 240 people who have huge appetites. Since we're in Mexico, we're eating a lot of beans and rice and tortillas and some days an oatmeal that tastes good but has the consistancy of a watery milkshake.

7:30am: By now, most everyone is on the road. In the last two weeks, we've had two days off and we've only had one day that's been less than 45 miles--every other day has been more than 60 miles.

11:30am: It's a good day when I'm at the midday checkpoint at this hour. The checkpoint means you've covered roughly half of that day's mileage. If it's past the noonhour--you pray there aren't a lot of hills ahead.

3:30pm: By now, you hope you've made it into that night's camp. You may have finished riding, but there's still a lot of work to do. You have to set-up your tent, clean-up, and get in line for dinner.

7-8:00pm: There's another chours of zippers--it's time for bed.
