Today's Millennium Stew --------
by Matt Markovich
---Andrea Bocelli will be playing at Long Island's Nassau Coliseum, becoming the first artist to defect from New York's troubled Celebration 2000 gala which was drastically scaled back because of poor ticket sales. But Bocelli won't be performing at midnight. His concert is set to end by 10pm, leaving open the possibility he may be a surprise performer at another nearby concert or New Year's Eve bash. Sting and Aretha Franklin were also set to perform at Celebration 2000. So far, there is no word from their PR folks if they are going to perform elsewhere. ---If you tried but failed to get tickets to Barbra Streisand's New Year's Eve concert in Las Vegas, how about the next best thing...her sister. Roslyn Kind looks and sounds alot like her sister Barbra, but she doesn't try to be her. She's playing a New Year's gig at the Cinegrill in Los Angeles. At Roslyn's bash you also get a five course dinner for $175. On the other hand, Bab's concert's top tickets go for $2500 and that's it.... dinner is extra. ---Athletes competing in Rome's millennium marathon Jan. 1 will get a special treat: a blessing from the pope. Pope John Paul II will kick off the race that starts at St. Peter's Square and winds through the heart of ancient Rome, passing by the Colosseum, the Baths of Caracalla and other tourist spots. Runners will cross the finish line in front of the Roman Forum. ---Some Millennium baby news from Florida: several parents-to-be said they've heard rumors of free diapers, free baby formula and other fabulous prizes for the millennium's first baby, but they aren't sure how to cash in. Tampa-based WFLZ-FM 93.3 is giving $ 25,000 to the parents who win its so-called "Breeders Cup," but the winners must best only the eight other couples who were chosen to participate in the contest last spring. BabyZone.com, a Pompano Florida-based company that offers pregnancy and parenting information on the Internet, has followed 70 "Y2K Couples" for the past nine months and will give a $ 1,000 savings bond to the first that delivers a baby after midnight Friday. And in the Hillsborough County suburb of Riverview, first-time parents Kerry and Shawn Mohan are hoping to win the $ 1,000 scholarship being donated by the St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary to the first New Year's baby born there.
