Today's Millennium Stew --------
by Matt Markovich
"All you need is love" for the new millennium according to three surviving members of the Fab Four. Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr are a promotion drive for the relaunch of "The Yellow Submarine," 30 years after the Beatles animated film was made. McCartney says their song should be the anthem for the next century. It just so happens, its also on the Yellow Submarine album... excuse me, CD.
Grab your jogging shoes! Alan Murray and Janette Murray-Wakelin of New Zealand will bring in the millennium by running the length of their Down Under homeland-a whopping 2,000 kilometers-a distance they plan to cover by running approximately a marathon a day. The journey, which they've dubbed "NZ2000 Team," begins December 17, 1999 in Cape Reinga and finishes on February 6, 2000 in Bluff. As part of their 2000-K trek, the "50-ish" couple also intends to participate in the Millennium Marathon in Hamilton on January 1. According to Runner's World magazine, they've been training for two years.
And residents around North Dakota are working on a quilt to mark the year 2000. The millennium quilt will be displayed during the New Year's Eve celebration at the Bismarck Civic Center. Free kits containing five fabric pieces are available at designated stores in cities around the state. Barnhardt said organizers hope to have all the blocks returned by Nov. 1 so the quilt can be completed on time. So far, the millennium quilt measures only 10 feet by 20 feet. The effort has been ongoing since March. The world's largest quilt measures 85 feet by 134 feet. They've got some work ahead of them.
