STORY:
Today's Millennium Stew --------
by Matt Markovich
It pays to be a superstar, especially on New Year's Eve. Get a load of some of the paychecks some of the top entertainers in the world will be getting for working around New Year's Eve. Elton John and Tina Turner will pocket $6 million apiece for one show at Ceasar's Palace on Dec. 30. Ditto for Bette Midler, who's playing two shows at the Mandalay Bay. Speaking of Mandalay, the Eagles are playing there on Dec. 27-28 and getting $ 5 million according to Daily Variety. Celine Dion will perform in Montreal on New Year's Eve, then fly to Vegas for a Cesear's Palace show on Jan. 1 that her handlers are saying will be her last concert ever - to the tune of $ 4 million. Then there's Rod Stewart, who is getting into the Vegas act with a New Year's show at the Rio that will pay him $ 3 million. And don't forget Tony Bennett, who has nailed down $ 1 million for two shows on Jan. 1-2 at the Desert Inn. But the biggest deal maker of all has got to be Barbra Streisand, who has snared $ 10 million for one - yup, one - New Year's Eve show at the MGM Grand. Want to be one of the first to tee off on New Year's Day in the world? Here's your chance to do it for free. Chipshot.com will be helping one lucky foursome usher in the New Year on the greens in Auckland, New Zealand with a dawn's first light tee-off time. It's part of their Ultimate Millennium Golf Trip contest at www.chipshot.com. As part of the prize package, chipshot.com is also providing its lucky winner and his or her guests to a lavish New Year's Eve celebration -- "2000 in the Sky" -- atop the famous Sky Tower in Auckland. The contest ends on November 24, 1999. But if you want to see dawn's first light from the best possible spot in Australia, you'll going to sign up for a national lottery. Sixty people whose names are drawn will be given the chance to climb to the summit of World Heritage-listed Mount Warning near Murwillumbah, in northern New South Wales, to welcome the sunrise. The New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service says hundreds of people have inquired about securing a place on the peak but safety and conservation concerns will restrict the number. People will be able to enter the ballot from next month. DATE: 10/13/99 Click for previous Millennium Stews If you have ingredients for a future stew, go ahead and email Matt at [email protected] |
