Nation's capital puts together special terrorist team
Washington D.C. would be appealing to a terrorist. The nation's capital has the White House, the Pentagon, monuments and diplomatic missions. With so many potential targets for terrorists the FBI and local police have formed a special task force.
The FBI has gathered agents from 12 local and federal agencies and formed what it is calling the "National Capital Domestic Response Squad". The squad includes a 50-member special weapons and tactics team, a bomb squad, a medical unit and a 20-member hazardous materials team.
This is just one level of fighting terrorism and deterring terrorist attacks. The FBI's field office terrorism it has another squad called the Infrastructure Protection squad whose goal is to thwart terrorist attacks on computers.
All in all the agencies involved include some top- notch crime fighting teams. They include the FBI; the State Department; the bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms; the Capitol Police; the Immigration and Naturalization Service; the Park Police; the Federal Protective Service; the Secret Service; the Washington Metropolitan Police Department; and the Metro transit police.
All these groups will be working together to make sure Washington D.C. will be safe from any possible terrorist threats and safe during a big New Year's Eve celebration on the Washington Mall.
Many other cities have counterterrorist squads, but the National Capital Domestic Response unit is the nation's largest. The squads leaders say the group has been working together and they are confident that everything will be safe this New Year's Eve in Washington D.C.
