STORY:
Paper Clothes for 2000

It may seem impractical but paper is making its way to the fashion runway

Throwaway fashion is on the runway of the 21st century and the new millennium. Paper products are making a splash in the fashion world. That’s right paper clothes are making a comeback.

The paper clothes trend actually started in the 60’s when Pop Art was in full swing. Artist James Rosenquit wore a paper suit to many fashionable functions. The fashion is back and Rosenquit is busy designing again.

Last year, fashion designer Hugo Boss asked Rosenquit to redesign the paper suit 90’s style. He did, and 50 suits were auctioned for charity after being worn by Dennis Hopper and Samuel L. Jackson. In fact, one of the paper suits is now permanently exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Where art goes, fashion follows and the paper trend is seriously taking off this year.

You can buy a variety of paper clothes. Choose from a creased paper shirt (John Rocha), paper Aertex top (Krizia World), paper look jacket (Uth) or a banana fiber paper hat (Paul Smith Men). In London, you can even buy it in Top Shop: Hussein Chalayan has created an affordable range for TS Design, including a paper shift dress, Velcro-fastening trousers, shirt and even a matching paper bag purse.

This time around, the fabric is called DuPont Tyvek and is more commonly used for courier envelopes and banners. It resembles paper but can be worn again and again, and even chucked in the washing machine. Throwaway fashion? No, you can wear this paper over and over again.
