![]() STORY: Food banks across America are hoping unused Y2K supplies will find their way to the needy (Everything2000) If you are one of many American's who stockpiled food in anticipation of Y2K chaos chances are your cupboards are still full of canned food. America's food banks are looking for you, hoping you will donate those extra supplies to charity. The nation's food banks are beginning a program to attract donations. The program is called "Y Go 2 Waste? They say some of the canned goods sitting on shelves could help feed thousands of poor and hungry across America. We can take all that food off their hands and have it all gone in a month," Janine Laird, executive director of the Minnesota Food Shelf Association told MSNBC. Laird's Association represents 320 food banks across Minnesota and the association distributes more than 24 million pounds of food a year. Officials don't know how much food was stockpiled in fear of a Y2K cataclysm. It might be a large resource they can tap, or it might not amount to much. Even so, they want the public to be aware of the opportunity to donate that food instead of having it sit on shelves for months to come. The "Y Go 2 Waste" program is a way to bolster supplies at food banks that are looking a little empty. This is the time of year that supplies get low. Many people donate food around Christmastime, but then the number of donations drops off dramatically. DATE: 1/10/2000 For more E2000 stories, click here: ![]() |
